In one life I was the good student and boyfriend turned fiancé, and in the other I was the unfaithful drunk pothead. When she would catch me getting high, she would be irate and I would promise to abstain, only to use as soon as I dropped her off at her parents’ house. DAYS SOBER – WHAT TO EXPECT

How can I be right all the time if others can be right some of the time? Not only did alcohol make me smart, it also made me impervious to the alternative viewpoints of almost everyone I encountered. You could spend your whole time going backwards, even, and still find something every day. I mean, now I have to be considerate and show at least a minimum level of compassion to foster a thriving relationship. I just told my wife what to think and when to think it. I ignored her frustration with me, and rather, focussed on all the things that made me frustrated about her.

She now understands that her addictive behavior was rooted in negative emotions, and she now knows how to better manage them. Kate had no interest in becoming sober until she lost everything.
